Fashion Design Students Runway Shows!

It is that time of year. Spring has arrived and with it colleges and universities will be conferring diplomas on seniors and grad students. I love this time of year. I know it won't be long that my "commute from hell" from Chelsea to Belmont and back again will be a bit easier as the schools close for the summer.

Another reason I love this time of year is the fashion design departments have been hard at work putting together fashion shows.

I am pleased that I will be attending Lasell's undergraduate show tomorrow night and the senior show Saturday night. Details.

Next up is attending the graduation at the School of Fashion Design on May 7. I am pleased that graduating designer, Candice Wu, a finalist in the BSO's Project Beethoven has personally invited me and my partner in crime for all things fashion, Kathy Benharris. Thank you Candice! It means a lot to be asked! Details.

Another big honor for Kathy and me is we have been asked to serve on the judge's panel for the fashion event held by Mt. Ida at the BCA on May 8. Yes. Kathy is going on mom's sacred day to help judge but we both couldn't be more thrilled. Details.

So if you want to see some of the talented folks coming out of the fashion design programs that will be helping you look beautiful in the near future, check out some of these shows!

They promise to be exciting, spectacular, and lots of great energy.

Boston artist Sophie Truong has organized a benefit gallery showing to help the victims of the multiple tragedies that took place in Japan this past month with the full consequences still not known as this story continues to unfold.

Jo Ann Rotschild has generously donated her gallery space, Gallery 535, adjacent to her studio at 535 Albany street, in the South End. The event is scheduled for Friday, May 6, 2011 from 6-9 PM. This coincides with the area's first Fridays event so it is hoped that there will be a good turnout.

There is parking on Albany street in the evening, and parking at 580 Harrison, 2 blocks away, which will also be open for First Friday.

Currently 50 artists have donated their works for the event. Please come out and join us for a special evening of charity, community and wonderful art.

I am planning a special portrait for the exhibition and I am very excited about not only providing the piece, but the session promises to be fun and great energy. The photo session is scheduled for this Saturday!

You can see some of the work already donated on the FB page for the event.

There are so many in need in so many places in the world. Take this as a reminder to give to your charity of choice.

Required Reading For Aspiring Models

I purchased Nigel Barker's book today and read through most of it in one sitting. This is an excellent book for models looking for some great insider tips and ideas on how to position themselves as models and gives them good insight into the industry. This is also a great way to attain a deeper understanding of themselves and learn skills that will serve them well regardless of what they ultimately choose as a career.

Nigel has a very personal and easy writing style that makes you feel as though you are sitting there with him. His insights and tips are invaluable and the "teaches" can be an extremely important process for models to work through.

I often tell new models that even if they decide not to pursue modeling, they should take away from the experience a deeper understanding of who they are as people and if they keep that in mind, it will have been a successfull personal journey.

I feel Nigel has conveyed that sentiment in a much more eloquent, practical way and with his years of experience on both sides of the camera, you have a priceless guide to help you get the most out of yourself and your modeling journey.

I am a photographer and would highly recommend this book for not only models and photographers, but anyone involved with the very important job of helping young people (which most of them are) get a good start in the industry with structured guidance.

I purchased two and will buy more and will recommend them to all models I work with.

No other medium tells a story quite as effectively as photography. An image allows the individual to respond emotionally and linger over the contents. A moment in time to absorb its meaning and leave an indelible impression in the mind's eye.

There are no simple answers to such an egregious wrong that has resulted in the suffering of indigenous people. Aaron Huey has provided an uncomfortable study for us to not simply watch, but has asked for a call of action to right a wrong.

Long overdue.

Sitting on the porch is a lost art. I seldom see my neighbors through the course of the day. We are too busy running off to work or off to spend money on things we don't need.

When I was a child, centralized air conditioning was rare. The summer heat would often drive people on to their porches in the evening which created many impromptu social interactions.

I miss that stronger sense of community sitting on the porch provided.

BSO Project Tchaikovsky Finale

Boston - The Boston Symphony Orchestra held their second fashion event and design competition, "Project Tchaikovsky" pver the evenings of April 13 and 15.

Patrons were treated to a pre-concert viewing of the designers selected as finalists. Designers attend area design programs throughout New England and added to their already hectic end of semester work load and produced some stunning gowns for the Tchaikovsky inspired theme.

A panel of Boston's fashion elite ran the designers through their paces and took great care in analysing the gowns and questioning the designers.

After a post-concert fashion show, the judges selected Rain Delisle as the winner of the competition and patrons selected as their favorite the gown created by Fallon Coster.

I'm always looking for creative inspiration. Whether it be from the dripping faucet conjuring songs and dreams or the work of other artists in media unexplored or just touched on by me. My search for a muse is elusive, ever-changing and I am a pursuer with tendencies toward being fickle and potentially shallow.

As I find video a more compelling way to develop a story and artistic statement, I look more to that media.

This is a great site and they are listening to the dripping faucet.

2nd Annual Fashion Contest & Event, Project Tchaikovsky
The Boston Symphony Orchestra presents Project Tchaikovsky, a unique fashion contest featuring fashion inspired by the music of Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky, scheduled in conjunction with upcoming BSO concerts featuring Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2, Little Russian, on April 13 and 15 at Symphony Hall. The Project Tchaikovsky contest will feature evening wear designs by ten talented fashion students affiliated with schools throughout the greater Boston area.

April 13 & 15
Symphony Hall doors will open at 6:30 p.m. on both Project Tchaikovsky evenings, allowing patrons to view the dresses, presented by models chosen by the designers, and enjoy the festive Symphony Hall atmosphere before taking their seats for the 8pm concert. The winner of Project Tchaikovsky will be announced at a special post-concert fashion event and reception in Higginson Hall, following the April 15 performance.

The Contestants:
The ten contestants competing in the Project Tchaikovsky contest are Madelaine Hay, Rhode Island School of Design; Nairomi Inoa, Yuya Kobayashi and Cam Yen Li, Mount Ida College; Fallon Coster, Rain Delisle and Melissa Higgins, Lasell College; Kelly Brown and Samira Vargus-Pena, Mass Art; and Kinda Touma, Newbury School of Fashion. Each contestant has been given $100 towards the production of his or her design. Cam Yen Li was a finalist in last year’s inaugural fashion event at Symphony Hall, Project Mozart.

The Judges:
The winner of Project Tchaikovsky will be determined by a judging panel including BSO violinist Wendy Putnam, fashion designers Michael DePaulo and Nara Paz, and Mary Nobile King, boutique director of Chanel and recently named one the Boston Globe's “25 Most Stylish People.” Jared Bowen, arts reporter for WGBH’s Greater Boston, will serve as the emcee for the April 15 post-concert event. The Project Tchaikovsky winner will be featured in Boston Magazine and receive dinner for two at the Oak Room. Additional prizes to be announced.

Project Tchaikovsky is made possible with support from Boston Magazine, Brandon Keith Hair, fashion consultant Kathy Benharris, makeup artist Debra Macki, and photographer William Downey.
